Commissioned on Aug. 13, Legacy transforms how the Skaneateles Lake Association deploys and retrieves benthic mats — the most effective non‑chemical tool for suppressing invasive Eurasian watermilfoil. Built by Elite Industries and customized with SLA experts and volunteers, Legacy is faster, safer, and designed for today’s lake conditions.

The Skaneateles Lake Association has managed invasive milfoil since the early 2000s to prevent it from overwhelming shallow waters and threatening water quality. As conditions change, the work must keep pace. Legacy equips our crews to expand coverage, improve efficiency, and safeguard native plants and habitats.
“This boat would not exist without Linda and Dan’s commitment to protecting Skaneateles Lake. Their generosity has given us a tool that is more efficient, more effective, and safer for our crews. Legacy represents the very best of what community‑driven conservation can achieve.”
— Dr. Bill Dean, SLA Board Member
“This boat is more than just equipment — it’s a testament to what’s possible when a community rallies to protect its lake. With Legacy, our crews can expand coverage, improve efficiency, and safeguard the native plants and habitats that make Skaneateles Lake so extraordinary.”
— Frank Moses, SLA Executive Director
Along with the support of the Roches, the expertise of SLA board members Bill Dean, Ph.D., and Bob DeWitt, alongside Kevin Donnelly, SLA’s master captain and fleet operations manager, guided the vessel’s design and launch. The christening recognized the Roches’ leadership gift and brought together members, community leaders, and long‑time supporters to celebrate a major milestone for lake protection.

Legacy powers the SLA’s Milfoil Control Program — which in 2024 surveyed 35 miles of shoreline, placed 325 mats, and invested more than $200,000 in invasive species control. Without these efforts, milfoil would quickly overtake shallow waters, displace native plants, degrade water quality, and restrict recreation.
“We are thrilled to support this vital work. Our family’s love for Skaneateles Lake runs deep, and we believe it’s everyone’s responsibility to ensure its future. Legacy is a step forward — but the fight to protect this lake is ongoing. Every volunteer, every donation, makes a difference.”
— Linda Roche
There are many ways to support the program — from volunteering on shore or dockside to funding seasonal operations and equipment.
