Our Story

A legacy of protecting Skaneateles Lake through science, partnership, and action.

For decades, the Skaneateles Lake Association has worked to protect one of New York’s most important drinking water sources. What began as a shared commitment to stewardship has grown into a coordinated, science-driven effort to preserve the lake for generations to come.

Early Stewardship

The foundation for today’s work began in 1969 with the incorporation of the Skaneateles Lake Pure Water Association, created to protect and preserve the lake and its watershed. In 1971, the organization secured 501(c)(3) status, establishing its long-term commitment to public benefit.

As awareness and regional collaboration grew, the Tri-County Skaneateles Lake Association formed in 1992 to expand this mission. In 1999, the two efforts formally merged, strengthening both structure and impact under one unified organization.

In 2011, the organization took on the name it carries today—the Skaneateles Lake Association—marking a new chapter in a decades-long commitment to protecting one of New York’s most vital water resources.

A Turning Point (2017)

In 2017, the emergence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) changed everything and  marked a critical moment for Skaneateles Lake. It highlighted the need for coordinated action, stronger monitoring, and a science-based response to emerging threats.

For the first time, the long-term health of Skaneateles Lake faced a visible and urgent threat.

This moment sparked a new level of coordination, investment, and scientific focus—reshaping how the lake would be protected moving forward.

Science & Strategy

The formation of the Lake Ecology Team (LET) and expanded partnerships with institutions like SUNY ESF, Syracuse University, and the Finger Lakes Institute brought new insight and direction to lake protection efforts.

Investment in Action

From expanding the milfoil control program to launching the Legacy barge, the Skaneateles Lake Association has invested in tools and programs that directly protect the lake and improve long-term outcomes.

Looking Ahead

Today, the work continues with long-term planning efforts like the 9E Plan, designed to address watershed-wide challenges and ensure continued water quality for generations to come.
