JUMP ON BOARD: Dr. Robert Werner Research & Education Boat @ Clift Park – Meet at Clift Park and explore the Skaneateles Lake Association’s Dr. Robert Werner Research & Education Boat (“The Bob”) to learn about scientific lake equipment and water ecology. Skaneateles Lake Association Teams Up with Skaneateles Library for “Libraries Love Lakes” Education Series

SKANEATELES, NY – The Skaneateles Lake Association (SLA) and the Skaneateles Library have joined Libraries Love Lakes to promote appreciation and protection of Skaneateles Lake. Libraries Love Lakes (LLL) was started in 2019 by members of the Global Lakes Ecological Observatory Network to promote awareness and protection of water resources.

“We are thrilled to partner with so many wonderful organizations on Libraries Love Lakes programs during July’s Lake Appreciation Month” said Nadia Harvieux, Associate Director for Educational Programs at the Finger Lakes Institute of Hobart and William Smith Colleges and LLL program co-founder.

The Skaneateles Library and the SLA collaborated to host programs for three to five-year-olds on Monday, July 17, and for six and seven year olds on Wednesday, July 19. Both programs included sharing information and craft activities focused on animal life in and around the lake.

“Skaneateles Library is so excited to partner with SLA on these programs. A core mission of libraries is to inspire learning in our communities and the opportunity to celebrate this natural resource– all in the name of fun–is a great win for everyone” said Mary Beth Schwartzwalder, Librarian for Kids and Teens, Skaneateles Library.

On Thursday, July 20, eight to twelve-year-olds were invited to “Jump on Board” the Skaneateles Lake Association’s research boat after learning more about local efforts to keep Skaneateles Lake “clear and pure” through scientific monitoring and proactive measures.

“It’s not only important for efforts to protect critical resources like Skaneateles Lake, but also imperative that we inspire stewardship in future generations to continue to care for such a gem” said Frank Moses, SLA Executive Director.

All participants were given craft and information kits prepared by the SLA to take home to continue learning about our most valuable local resource. In addition, the Skaneateles Library hosted a “Libraries Love Lakes” book display highlighting the importance of clean water in our daily lives. Librarians and SLA members conducted the programs.
