• • Water Quality Monitoring: The SLA actively works with researchers from SU and ESF to research and monitor Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). By tracking nutrient loading and water clarity, this work helps provide early warnings, minimizing the toxin risks for people and pets.
  • Milfoil Control: Since 2006, the SLA’s Milfoil Control Program has successfully mitigated and managed invasive aquatic plants, like Eurasian milfoil, by laying specialized benthic mats over patches of this invasive weed.
  • Boat Launch Steward Program: For the past XX years, the SLA’s Boat Launch Steward Program has trained boat stewards at the lake’s three public launches to thoroughly inspect watercraft, which prevents the introduction of aggressive species like Hydrilla.

  • Watershed Preservation: The SLA supports and advances streambank stabilization projects and roadside ditch improvements to reduce erosion and runoff into the lake. 

  • Hemlock Protection Program: The SLA works to protect Eastern Hemlock trees–a “keystone” species that stabilizes shorelines and filters runoff–from the deadly Hemlock Woolly Adelgid by providing treatment to homeowners in the Skaneateles watershed. 

  • Community Education: Through our “Lake Friendly Living” initiative, the SLA encourages residents to plant native plants, reduce pesticide use, manage stormwater, and maintain septic systems to minimize their environmental footprint.
